For the French Toast Bake
  • 1 loaf challah or brioche bread cut into cubes
  • 6 large eggs
  • 2 cups milk whole milk recommended
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 3/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup maple syrup for drizzling on top
  • 1/2 cup chopped nuts optional, such as pecans or walnuts
  • Powdered sugar for serving

Equipment

  • 9x13 inch baking dish
  • Mixing bowls
  • Whisk
  • Knife
  • Measuring Cups and Spoons
  • Plastic Wrap
  • Oven mitts
  • Serving Platter

Method

  1. Step 1: Begin by cutting your loaf of bread into cubes, about 1-2 inches in size. Place the bread cubes into a greased 9x13 inch baking dish, ensuring they are evenly distributed.
  2. Step 2: In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk, heavy cream, granulated sugar, vanilla extract, ground cinnamon, and salt until well combined.
  3. Step 3: Pour the custard mixture evenly over the bread cubes. Use a spatula or a spoon to gently press down the bread, ensuring all pieces are soaked in the custard.
  4. Step 4: Drizzle 1/2 cup of maple syrup over the top of the mixture. If using nuts, sprinkle them over the top as well.
  5. Step 5: Cover the baking dish tightly with plastic wrap and place it in the refrigerator overnight.
  6. Step 6: The next morning, preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Remove the plastic wrap and let it sit at room temperature for about 15 minutes before baking.
  7. Step 7: Bake for 45-50 minutes, or until golden brown and set in the center. Dust with powdered sugar before serving.

Notes

Leftovers can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. Reheat in the oven or microwave before serving.
