Instructions
  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9x13 inch baking pan.
  2. Make the crust: In a large bowl, combine flour, oats, brown sugar, baking powder, and salt. Cut in cold butter using a pastry blender or your fingers until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Press half of the mixture into the prepared pan.
  3. Make the filling: In a separate bowl, combine sliced apples, brown sugar, caramel sauce, lemon juice, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt. Toss gently to coat.
  4. Spread the apple mixture evenly over the crust in the pan.
  5. Make the crumble topping: In a medium bowl, combine flour, oats, brown sugar, and salt. Cut in cold butter until crumbly. Stir in nuts, if using.
  6. Sprinkle the crumble topping evenly over the apple filling.
  7. Bake for 35-40 minutes, or until the topping is golden brown and the filling is bubbly.
  8. Let cool completely in the pan before cutting into bars.

Notes

For a richer caramel flavor, use homemade salted caramel sauce. You can also experiment with different types of apples or add other spices like cardamom or allspice to the filling.
